About Ants
Ants commonly found in Rowlett, Rockwall, and Wylie Texas (and the surrounding areas)
There are many common household ants in Texas. The three most common are the fire ant, the acrobat ant, and the carpenter ant.
Red Imported Fire Ants, Solenopsis Invicta
The red imported fire ant is one of the most common ant species in eastern Texas and the southeastern U.S. It is distinguished by its reddish-brown color, double pedicel, and workers that range in size from 1/16 to 3/16 inch. Additionally, fire ants make large mounds without any visible entrance holes. In response to nest disturbance, the fire ant responds aggressively by stinging vigorously and painfully. In late summer, fire ants often nest outdoors, although they will enter buildings in search of water and food.
Acrobat ants, Crematogaster
Because of their similar coloration and nesting habits, these medium-sized ants are often confused with carpenter ants. Acrobat ants, however, are quite distinct from carpenter ants. The workers of acrobat ants are all the same size, and their thorax has two spines. The majority of their activity is during the day, unlike carpenter ants. In a defensive posture, acrobat ants raise their distinctive, heart-shaped gasters into the air in the same way an acrobat might do. In addition to nesting in trees, acrobat ants can be found in the walls and insulation of structures.
Carpenter ants, Camponotus
The size of Carpenter ants is usually between 1/4 and 1/2 inches, and they may be solid black, brown, or a combination of black and red-orange. In profile, workers have a smooth, curved thorax, variable size, and a single pedicel. The carpenter ant is primarily nocturnal, emerging at night along fences, tree limbs, water hoses, or other linear objects. Although they do not sting, they are capable of biting. Nests are often found in hollow trunks and branches of trees, but they will also make their homes in hollow doors, boxes, and walls.
Ants Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
How Long Do Ants Live?
Depending on their status in the colony and their gender, ants can live from a few weeks to a few decades. Unlike female ants, male ants live for the shortest period of time, only reproducing for a few weeks and then dying.
A female working ant lives for a few months at a time, working in the colony and serving its queen until she passes away. Last but not least, queens of ant colonies can live as long as 30 years or more!
When do ants become most active?
Summer and spring are the most active seasons for ants. During the winter, ants seek warmth under rocks, trees' bark, and deep soil as temperatures drop.
Is it possible to get sick from having ants in your house?
When ants enter a home, they can trigger a person's allergies, similar to many other insects. In people who already suffer from respiratory illnesses, ants may aggravate their asthma symptoms.
